Sermon Outline

During trying times we can either weather the storm or wither under it.

Responsibility =
The ABILITY to RESPOND

Five ways to weather the storm:

1. Heed God's commands.

Mark 6:45 NKJVImmediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away.

2. Head in the same direction as Jesus.

Mark 6:46 NKJVAnd when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray.

John 6:15 NKJVTherefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

Jesus sought guidance always from the Father, so He prayed.

John 18:36 NKJVJesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."

Two important questions to ask about prayer:
• What are you praying?
• Why are you praying?

3. Don't give up.

Mark 6:47-48 NKJVNow when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land. 48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by.

Sometimes all we can do is simply HOLD THE LINE!

Sometimes not giving an inch is as precious as taking a mile!

4. Avoid misinterpreting your present condition.

Mark 6:48-50 NKJVThen He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by. 49 And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid."

They so misinterpreted their present condition, that they missed the best reason for trusting in Him... HE WAS WALKING ON WATER!

Mark 6:7 NKJVAnd He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.

Mark 6:12-13 NKJVSo they went out and preached that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.

Romans 8:35-39 NKJVWho shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: "For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter." 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

How do you counter lies and darkness?
• Turn on the light

Psalm 119:105 NKJVYour word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

How do you counter lies and darkness?
• Turn on the light
• Acknowledge His presence

Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJVTrust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

5. Embrace the Supremacy of Christ.

Mark 6:51-56 NKJVThen He went up into the boat to them, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. 52 For they had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened. 53 When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 And when they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him, 55 ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was. 56 Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.

To miss meeting a person of fame may be heartbreaking, but to miss meeting Jesus Christ is a tragedy of epic proportion.
