“Marks of Discipleship Pt. 2”
disciple (mathetes) =
a learner, i.e. pupil
True disciples are determined to make much of the Word, not the world.
The "world", as described by John, is not a reference to the matter that makes up our physical planet. Instead, it refers to the social structures, belief systems, and priorities that can control and consume us.
1 John 2:15-17 NKJV Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
1. If we love the world, it will push out the Word.
- L ies to us (Makes empty promises)
- E ntices us (Appeals to our flesh)
- D istracts us (Keeps us from what's best)
Many people who love the world are simply over-committed to good things, and under-committed to Godly things.
2. If we love the Word, it will push out the world.
Colossians 3:16 NKJV Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
to inhabit, reside
Colossians 3:1-7 NKJV If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. 5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.
Benefits of making much of the Word:
- The Word provides wisdom.
- The Word promotes knowledge.
- The Word produces joy.
Is the world choking out the WORD or is the WORD choking out the world?
