“I Choose LOVE!”
Galatians 5:19-25 NKJV Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
I Choose (Nine Fruits of the Spirit)
Why this title and series?
- Too many of us assume we can't change.
- Too many of us believe we only have one option.
- Too many of us are reacting when we could be responding.
The Ability to Respond
- Who in your past influenced you the most?
- Who is influencing you the most right now?
- Who should be influencing you the most?
The Holy Spirit has a greater ability to influence our lives for good than anyone else or everyone else combined!
A Spirit-filled Example:
Acts 20:17-23 NKJV From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. 18 And when they had come to him, he said to them: "You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, 19 serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; 20 how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, 21 testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, 23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me.
The word "bound", along with its root word bind, denotes…
- Being confined
Matthew 13:30 NKJV Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn."
- Being committed
Romans 7:2 NKJV For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband.
- Being compelled
Matthew 21:2 NKJV saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me.
Fruit of the Spirit #1: LOVE
The Holy Spirit supernaturally provides a love we don't naturally possess.
Three Types of Love:
- Eros = erotic/pleasure
- Phileo = friendship
- Agape = Godly love
Agape love is…
- Missional: It leads to action.
- Provisional: It provides for current or future needs.
- Unconditional: It gives without expectations.
- Volitional: It is done as an act of the will.
- Intentional: It is done on purpose and for a purpose.
- Motivational: It serves to motivate others to do likewise.
How different might your relationships be if you relied on the love the Holy Spirit provides?
How different might THAT relationship be if you did?
