Sermon Outline

1. The origin of lying.
• It didn't begin with God.

Titus 1:2 NKJV in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,

Hebrews 6:18 NKJV that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.

• It began with the devil.

Genesis 2:17 NKJV but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.″Genesis 3:4 NKJV Then the serpent said to the woman, ″You will not surely die.

John 8:42-47 NKJV Jesus said to them, ″If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.″

• It is engrained in our ″fallen″ nature.

Numbers 23:19 NKJV ″God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

Psalm 58:3 NKJV The wicked are estranged from the womb; They go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.

2. The reason for lying.

Common reasons include…

Fear: We fear the consequences of telling the truth.
Image: We dread the thought of people knowing the truth.
Beliefs: We underestimate the fallout from failing to tell the truth.

3. The cost for lying.
• We might lose touch with reality.

1 Timothy 4:1-2 NKJV Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,

• We might sacrifice our integrity.

Proverbs 14:5 NKJV A faithful witness does not lie, But a false witness will utter lies.

• We might pay for all eternity.

Revelation 21:5-8 NKJV Then He who sat on the throne said, ″Behold, I make all things new.″ And He said to me, ″Write, for these words are true and faithful.″ 6 And He said to me, ″It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. 7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. 8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.″

1 John 5:10-13 NKJV He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

4. The alternative to lying.
• Live in the presence of God.

Galatians 1:20 NKJV (Now concerning the things which I write to you, indeed, before God, I do not lie.)

• Live out of our identity in Christ.

Ephesians 4:25 NKJV Therefore, putting away lying, ″Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,″ for we are members of one another.

Colossians 3:9-11 NKJV Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.
