“The Ministry of the Holy Spirit”

Sermon Outline

Ephesians 4:30 NKJV And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

I. The Person of the Holy Spirit.

⇒ Ways His personhood is revealed in scripture:

A. He is referred to as ″He″, not it.

John 14:15-18 NKJV ″If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.John 16:5-15 NKJV ″But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ′Where are You going?′ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

B. He can be quenched.

1 Thessalonians 5:19 NKJV Do not quench the Spirit.

C. He can be lied to.

Acts 5:3 NKJV But Peter said, ″Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?

D. He can be resisted/opposed.

Acts 7:51-52 NKJV ″You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers,

E. He can be grieved.

Ephesians 4:30 NKJV And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

II. The Work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament.

⇒ He supplied believers with…

A. Wisdom.

Exodus 31:1-5 NKJV Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 ″See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, 4 to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, 5 in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship.

B. Power.

Judges 14:19 NKJV Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. So his anger was aroused, and he went back up to his father's house.Judges 16:20 NKJV And she said, ″The Philistines are upon you, Samson!″ So he awoke from his sleep, and said, ″I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!″ But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him.

C. Courage.

2 Chronicles 24:20 NKJV Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood above the people, and said to them, ″Thus says God: ′Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the Lord, He also has forsaken you.′ ″

D. Guidance.

2 Samuel 23:1-2 NKJV Now these are the last words of David. Thus says David the son of Jesse; Thus says the man raised up on high, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel: 2 ″The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue.

III. The Work of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament.

⇒ His work in believers includes…

A. Indwelling us.

18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 NKJV Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

B. Enlightening us.

John 14:17, 25-26 NKJV the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.25 ″These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 16:12-14 NKJV ″I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

C. Equipping us.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 NKJV There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

C. Empowering us.

Ephesians 3:20 NKJV Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

D. Emboldening us.

Acts 4:23-31 NKJV And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: ″Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ′Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things? 26 The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the Lord and against His Christ.′ 27 For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. 29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.″ 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

E. Sealing us.

Ephesians 4:30 NKJV And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
