“Intro To Spiritual Warfare”

Sermon Outline

-= An Overview of Spiritual Warfare =-

I. The Reason for the conflict.

Ephesians 6:10-11 NKJV Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

A. The battle that rages centers around the Glory of God.

Revelation 4:9-11 NKJV Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: 11 ″You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.″

B. God deserves it, Satan desires it.

Isaiah 14:12-14 NKJV ″How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! 13 For you have said in your heart: ′I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.′

Leviticus 17:7 NKJV They shall no more offer their sacrifices to demons, after whom they have played the harlot. This shall be a statute forever for them throughout their generations.″ ′

Psalm 106:34-37 NKJV They did not destroy the peoples, Concerning whom the Lord had commanded them, 35 But they mingled with the Gentiles And learned their works; 36 They served their idols, Which became a snare to them. 37 They even sacrificed their sons And their daughters to demons,

II. The Characters in the conflict.

Ephesians 6:12 NKJV For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

A. They are spiritual.
  1. God.

John 4:24 NKJV God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.″John 1:14 NKJV And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

  2. Angels.

Genesis 19:1-3 NKJV Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. 2 And he said, ″Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant's house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.″ And they said, ″No, but we will spend the night in the open square.″ 3 But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. Then he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

Hebrews 13:2 NKJV Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.

  3. Satan.

Genesis 3:1 NKJV Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, ″Has God indeed said, ′You shall not eat of every tree of the garden′?″

  4. Fallen angels.

Mark 6:7 NKJV And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.

Luke 7:21 NKJV And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.

1 Timothy 4:1 NKJV Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,

B. They are not equals.
  1. God alone is infinite in power, wisdom and ability.
  2. Satan and the fallen/unholy angels…

    • Were cast from their positions.

Revelation 12:3-9 NKJV And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. 4 His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born. 5 She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne. 6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days. 7 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

    • Have a sure fate.

Matthew 25:41 NKJV ″Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ′Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:

    • Operate with granted abilities.

Luke 22:31-32 NKJV And the Lord said, ″Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.″

    • Possess limited authority.

Daniel 10:13, 20 NKJV But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia.20 Then he said, ″Do you know why I have come to you? And now I must return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I have gone forth, indeed the prince of Greece will come.

    • Are opposed to the will and work of God.

2 Peter 3:9 NKJV The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 NKJV But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

III. Our Response to the conflict.

Ephesians 6:13 NKJV Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

A. We can ignore it.
B. We can overemphasize it.
C. We can acknowledge it.

Application Questions:
  1. What did you learn in this study that you didn't know or had not thought about before?
  2. Does it shock you that a created being would try to usurp God's authority and power? Why or why not?
  3. Why do you think so many people believe in the supernatural, but not in a literal devil/Satan?
  4. When are you most aware of the spiritual battle the Bible describes?
  5. Why would God create a being knowing he would rebel? (That is the number one question many of us have regarding this topic.) What other questions do you have?
