“The Weapons of Spiritual Warfare Pt. 1”

Sermon Outline

Ephesians 6:10-15 NKJV Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

We are born into a world at war and opting out is not an option.

Weapons at our disposal include…
I. Truth.

Ephesians 6:14 NKJV Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

  1. Truth is not merely what God speaks, it's who He is.

Exodus 34:6 NKJV And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ″The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,

John 1:17 NKJV For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

  2. God wants us secure in the truth.

    I nformed by the truth.

Psalm 43:3 NKJV Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your tabernacle.Psalm 86:11 NKJV Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name.

Proverbs 16:6 NKJV In mercy and truth Atonement is provided for iniquity; And by the fear of the Lord one departs from evil.

    D irected by the truth.

Psalm 100:5 NKJV For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

Proverbs 3:3-4 NKJV Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, 4 And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.

John 16:13 NKJV However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

2 Corinthians 13:8 NKJV For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.

  3. God's enemies want us unsure of the truth.

2 Corinthians 11:1-4, 14-15 NKJV Oh, that you would bear with me in a little folly—and indeed you do bear with me. 2 For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it! 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

Galatians 4:16 NKJV Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?

John 8:45 NKJV But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.

    C hange the truth.

    E rase the truth.

    O bscure the truth.

Truth is not a moving target!

II. Breastplate of Righteousness.

Ephesians 6:14 NKJV Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

  1. We are made righteous by God.

Genesis 15:1-6 NKJV After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, ″Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.″ 2 But Abram said, ″Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?″ 3 Then Abram said, ″Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!″ 4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, ″This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.″ 5 Then He brought him outside and said, ″Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.″ And He said to him, ″So shall your descendants be.″ 6 And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Matthew 22:11-13 NKJV ″But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. 12 So he said to him, ′Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?′ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the servants, ′Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.′

  2. We live a righteous life for God.

Romans 6:1-4, 17-18 NKJV What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

III. Gospel of Peace.

Ephesians 6:15 NKJV and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

When we focus on spreading the gospel our…

  1. Intentions are purified.

Matthew 28:19 NKJV Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Mark 16:15 NKJV And He said to them, ″Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

  2. Minds are sharpened.

Luke 24:44-47 NKJV Then He said to them, ″These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.″ 45 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. 46 Then He said to them, ″Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

  3. Efforts are empowered.

Acts 1:8 NKJV But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.″

Application Questions:
  1. Many today believe that truth is up for debate. Why are people who believe God created everything more likely to believe in absolute truth?
  2. What truth does the enemy try to change, erase or obscure from you? Why that truth?
  3. Why is it so important to understand that the Breastplate of Righteous (Salvation/A right standing with God) is not something we earn, but instead a gift we receive? Some people believe we work for salvation, while the Bible says we are to work from salvation. Why does it matter which one we believe?
  4. How can going on offense (sharing the “Gospel of Peace” and being an active witness for Christ) help us live a more consistent Christian life?
  5. Which of the three weapons (Truth, Breastplate of Righteousness, Gospel of Peace) do you need to utilize more consistently? What steps will you take to ensure you do?
