“The Weapons of Spiritual Warfare Pt. 2”

Sermon Outline

Ephesians 6:10-17 NKJV Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

We are born into a world at war, and opting out is not an option.

Weapons at our disposal include…
I. Shield of Faith.

Ephesians 6:16 NKJV above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

No one is more influential in your life than you are because no one talks to you more than you do.

  1. The enemy's goal is to exploit us through our…
    • Physical vulnerabilities.
    • Mental & Emotional vulnerabilities.
    • Spiritual vulnerabilities.
  2. The enemy's goal is to isolate us from our…
    • Father.
    • Family.
II. Helmet of Salvation.

Ephesians 6:17 NKJV And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

  1. It is a source of protection.
  2. It is a symbol of our position.

    Note how secure we are ″in″ Christ in the following texts.

    John 3:36 NKJV He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.″John 5:24 NKJV ″Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.John 10:27-30 NKJV My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 I and My Father are one.″

    2 Timothy 1:12 NKJV For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.

    1 Peter 1:3-5 NKJV Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

    1 John 5:11-13 NKJV And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

III. Sword of the Spirit.

Ephesians 6:17 NKJV And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

  1. This sword was short and used when in close range with the enemy.
  2. It addresses a targeted approach to a targeted attack.

    As with Jesus, we are tempted to doubt…

    • God's provision.

      Matthew 4:1-4 NKJV Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, ″If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.″ 4 But He answered and said, ″It is written, ′Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.′ ″

    • God's protection.

      Matthew 4:5-7 NKJV Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, ″If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ′He shall give His angels charge over you,′ and, ′In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.′ ″ 7 Jesus said to him, ″It is written again, ′You shall not tempt the Lord your God.′ ″

    • God's plan.

      Matthew 4:8-10 NKJV Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, ″All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.″ 10 Then Jesus said to him, ″Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ′You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.′ ″

Application Questions:
  1. What area of vulnerability (physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual) does the enemy seek to exploit in you? How have you been able to counter his attack?
  2. Why are we more vulnerable when we choose to isolate ourselves from other believers?
  3. What benefits arise from having assurance of our salvation?
  4. Why does a targeted attack call for a targeted approach? What scripture have you found especially helpful when you are being attacked in a targeted way?
  5. Which of the three weapons (Shield of faith, Helmet of Salvation, Sword of the Spirit) do you need to utilize more consistently? What steps will you take to ensure that you do?
