For the Joy Set Before Him:

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Joseph, sold into slavery by his brothers, proclaimed to them in Genesis 50 "…as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive." In the same way, the sovereign God of the Universe used the wicked desires and sin of evil men, like Pontius Pilate and the Pharisees, to bring about the simultaneous murder of His son Jesus and the once-for-all sacrifice that sets captive souls free. In perfect obedience, Jesus submitted to His own torture and death, knowing that there was a joy on the other side of the pain and agony—a people He would call His own: His bride, the church.

1. A REDEEMED People:

1 Peter 1:17-19 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

Every one of us has been born with a sinful nature inherited from our father and likely a flawed theology, if not religious or outright pagan traditions, in our upbringing. Peter teaches us that a ransom must be paid, or put another way—a sacrifice must be made, to redeem us out of our useless beliefs and conduct and the price to secure our redemption is infinitely high. There is no wealth on earth that can pull us out and elevate us from our state of futility. Only the shed blood of One born without sin and capable of living a life of absolutely complete obedience and righteousness is able to secure for sinful, corrupted people both a new way of living this life together AND an eternal future together in the presence of God our Blessed Redeemer.

SONG: "Blessed Redeemer" by Casting Crowns

Romans 6:13 …do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

God means for His people—those who are the beneficiaries of His mercy—to live their lives in a way that both honors the sacrifice that Jesus made in our place and serves to make known to the world that Jesus is an infinitely greater treasure than anything on this earth. We do this by turning from sin to worship God with our whole lives—everything we think, say, and do—as instruments of righteousness.

3. A DEPENDENT People:

John 15:5-8 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

We are wholly dependent, as mere branches, on the life giving vine that is Jesus Christ. Apart from Him, there is no spiritual life and no hope for heaven. Not only this, but God the Father is working among His people like a vine dresser who cares for the health of the union between the vine and branches by pruning away fruitless, lifeless branches so that the true branches may flourish, both individually and in community with each other. And so, for the true branches—people truly united to Christ through faith—our righteousness, our faith, our joy, our life, and our future are not our own.

SONG: "The Field of Stars / A Future Not My Own" by Matt Maher

Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying: "You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation…"

Revelation 12:10-11 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death."

Jesus' blood was shed on the cross to cover the sin of and bear God's wrath for a diversified people—saints from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. That same blood, in concert with the testimony of the very people it saved, overcome the accusations of Satan against the saints—proving him to be a liar and the saints to be true sons and daughters of God.

5. A UNITED People (communion):

1 Corinthians 1:9-10 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

1 John 1:3-4 …that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.
