Sermon Outline

Galatians 5:22-25 NKJV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Love and Self-control are at either end, sandwiching the others. If we deploy them, the other seven are predictable.
What have you lost as a result of losing control?

Proverbs 25:28 NKJV Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.Proverbs 29:11 NKJV A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back.

Why is controlling certain sinful behaviors so illusive?
Why are we able to control ourselves only sometimes?
You are not doing it right now. So, what changes between now and when you just can't seem to control yourself?

Self-control is not really about control, it's about surrender.

We must come to the life-changing reality that God alone always has our best interest at heart!

Yielding to God involves a predetermined…
1. Devotion.

1 Corinthians 6:17-20 NKJV But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.

Psalm 63:1 NKJV O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.

2. Declaration.

Philippians 1:21 NKJV For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

3. Denunciation.

1 Peter 4:1-4 NKJV Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. 3 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. 4 In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you.

1 Corinthians 15:33 NKJV Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits."

4. Disposition.

Luke 9:23 NKJV Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

Galatians 2:20 NKJV I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Self-control is about yielding control to the One who makes obedience possible!
