Fellowship = two fellows in a ship

A person's influence on you depends largely on their closeness to you.
You don't pick your family, but you do pick your family of influencers.

1. The Plan of Marriage

Genesis 2:18-25 NKJV And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

It was God's idea!

Proverbs 18:22 NKJV He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the Lord.

2. The Picture of Marriage
  • God's union to Israel, the Jewish people.

Jeremiah 3:14 NKJV "Return, O backsliding children," says the Lord; "for I am married to you. I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.

  • Jesus' union to His bride, the church.

Ephesians 5:25-33 NKJV Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

3. The Purpose of Marriage

1 Peter 3:7 NKJV Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.

  • Man-centered marriage = It is good so long as I get what I want out of it.
  • God-centered marriage = It is good because it brings God glory and points a sinful world to a reconciling Creator.

It is more about making us holy, than happy.

Pick your mate wisely because he/she is…
1. The friend who walks beside you.

Amos 3:3 NKJV Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?

2. The agent who consistently humbles you.

Proverbs 27:5 NKJV Open rebuke is better Than love carefully concealed.Proverbs 28:23 NKJV He who rebukes a man will find more favor afterward Than he who flatters with the tongue.

3. The lover who graciously satisfies you.

1 Corinthians 7:2-4 NKJV Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. 3 Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

Picking the right mate and being the right mate are equally important!
