Sermon Outline

HopeCC Core Value Serving: Everyone is gifted to serve (We see ourselves as contributors, not merely consumers.)

Everyone enjoys being on a team with shared goals, that's making a difference, and has leaders who care.

The most challenging and rewarding teams are full of volunteers.

Let's look at an example in the Apostle Paul's life that provides some valuable insight for all who lead and/or follow.
1. A team united.

Acts 12:25 NKJV And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their ministry, and they also took with them John whose surname was Mark.Acts 13:5 NKJV And when they arrived in Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. They also had John as their assistant.

2. A team shorthanded.

Acts 13:13 NKJV Now when Paul and his party set sail from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia; and John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem.

3. A team divided.

Acts 15:36-41 NKJV Then after some days Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us now go back and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they are doing." 37 Now Barnabas was determined to take with them John called Mark. 38 But Paul insisted that they should not take with them the one who had departed from them in Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work. 39 Then the contention became so sharp that they parted from one another. And so Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus; 40 but Paul chose Silas and departed, being commended by the brethren to the grace of God. 41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.Colossians 4:10 NKJV Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, with Mark the cousin of Barnabas (about whom you received instructions: if he comes to you, welcome him),

4. A team restored

2 Timothy 4:6-11 NKJV For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. 9 Be diligent to come to me quickly; 10 for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica—Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry.

useful (euchrestos) = profitable, easily used, employed

The most "useful" people are…
  • Saved

Philemon 1:10-11 NKJV I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains, 11 who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me.

  • Sanctified

2 Timothy 2:20-21 NKJV But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. 21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.

  • Softened

2 Timothy 4:11 NKJV Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry.

In Conclusion:
It's never too late to re-enlist or re-engage!
