Sermon Outline

Shepherds lead sheep to sources of food and places of safety.
Shepherds are called by God, but confirmed by men. (See 1 Timothy 3:1-7)

The shepherd's role is…
1. Positional.

Hebrews 13:7 NKJV Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.

Acts 20:28 NKJV Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

2. Educational.

Hebrews 13:7 NKJV Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.

1 Timothy 5:17 NKJV Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.

3. Inspirational.

Hebrews 13:7 NKJV Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.

4. Motivational.

Hebrews 13:8-9 NKJV Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 9 Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.

The shepherd's role is NOT…
1. Dictatorial.

Hebrews 13:17-18 NKJV Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. 18 Pray for us; for we are confident that we have a good conscience, in all things desiring to live honorably.

2. Substitutional.

Hebrews 13:20-21 NKJV Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Sheep's Role:

To willfully follow and lovingly support scripturally grounded shepherds.

Are you a sheep?

If yes, are you a docile or a difficult sheep?

How can you help, not hinder, the shepherds called to lead you?
  • Close down the dump.
  • Come to dinner.
  • Call out to God for him/them.
  • Connect with the mission.
