Sermon Outline

Jeremiah 9:23-24 NKJVThus says the Lord: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; 24 But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says the Lord.

General Info:

  • Shaddai occurs almost 50 times in OT.
  • It means sufficient and is translated Almighty.
  • It is combined with El (God) in OT to make "God Almighty".
  • The Greek Septuagint used the Greek word "ikanos", which means all-sufficient.
  • El-Shaddai is the one who supplies all our needs.

1. God (El-Shaddai is the One who makes us Fruitful

⇒ Our fruitfulness may require our patience.

Genesis 17:1-4 NKJVWhen Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. 2 And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly." 3 Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: 4 "As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.

Genesis 17:17-19 NKJVThen Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, "Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?" 18 And Abraham said to God, "Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!" 19 Then God said: "No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.

⇒ Our fruitfulness may include our descendants. (It did in Abraham's case)

  • To Isaac, his son

Genesis 28:3-4 NKJV"May God Almighty bless you, And make you fruitful and multiply you, That you may be an assembly of peoples; 4 And give you the blessing of Abraham, To you and your descendants with you, That you may inherit the landIn which you are a stranger, Which God gave to Abraham."

  • To Isaac, his son
  • To Jacob, his grandson

Genesis 35:9-12 NKJVThen God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and blessed him. 10 And God said to him, "Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name." So He called his name Israel. 11 Also God said to him: "I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body. 12 The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land."

  • To Isaac, his son
  • To Jacob, his grandson
  • To Joseph, his great grandson

Genesis 49:22-25 NKJV"Joseph is a fruitful bough, A fruitful bough by a well; His branches run over the wall. 23 The archers have bitterly grieved him, Shot at him and hated him. 24 But his bow remained in strength, And the arms of his hands were made strong By the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob (From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel), 25 By the God of your father who will help you, And by the Almighty who will bless you With blessings of heaven above, Blessings of the deep that lies beneath, Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.

⇒ Our fruitfulness will involve our dependence.

John 15:1-5 NKJV"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
