Sermon Outline

God has given us three great lights that point to His existence:

  1. Creation
  2. Christ
  3. Conscience

Conscience Defined:
Mankind's internal, moral consciousness meant to inform/guide decision making.

Our conscience was pre-loaded to our manufacturer specs.

Romans 2:14-15 NKJVfor when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them)

Our conscience can remain good (helpful) or become defiled (hurtful).

Acts 24:16 NKJVThis being so, I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men.

Titus 1:15-16 NKJVTo the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.

A good, clean conscience is absolutely essential to being IN TUNE with God and His will!

Our conscience, like a chirping smoke alarm, is a gift for our good. The interruptions are important... and shouldn't be annoying!

To be IN TUNE with God, we need to change what needs changing so our conscience works for us and not against us.

Three helpful tools (alarms) God has given us to gauge/govern our spiritual lives are Pain, Fear, and Anger.

Alarm Tool #1: PAIN

It is not a matter of IF we'll experience pain, but rather where and why.

2 Corinthians 1:8-12 NKJVFor we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. 9 Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, 10 who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us, 11 you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many. 12 For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.

Paul faced hardship BECAUSE OF, not IN SPITE of His faith.

Where and why are you experiencing pain?

Alarm Tool #2: FEAR

Fear is either a powerful or a terrible motivator. It all depends on the source.

2 Chronicles 19:9 NKJVAnd he commanded them, saying, "Thus you shall act in the fear of the Lord, faithfully and with a loyal heart:"

Instead of seeing the glass half full or empty, see it opportunistically. Fill it back up!

What is what you're fearing telling you?

The Fear of the Lord... Is the beginning of wisdom

Psalm 111:10 NKJVThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.

The Fear of the Lord... Means we'll hate what God does

Proverbs 8:13 NKJVThe fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.

The Fear of the Lord... Brings us peace and assurance

Proverbs 14:26 NKJVIn the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge.

The Fear of the Lord... Is the beginning of wisdom

Acts 9:31 NKJVThen the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.

Alarm Tool #3: ANGER

Ephesians 4:26 NKJV"Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

Anger occurs because of imperfect people who live in an imperfect world.

Who pushes your buttons most? If it isn't you, you are focused on the wrong person.

Spiritual Growth occurs when we are both proactive and reactive.

Discussion Questions

Questions For Kids

  1. What about the current situation makes you feel afraid?

  3. Do you have a question about something from the sermon? Ask your parent.

Questions For Adults

  2. What is your pain, fear and anger showing you?
  3. How IN TUNE are you with God and His will for you?
  4. Spend time reading through the little book of 1 John. How many things are referenced that address our conscience and how useful it is in helping us stay or get "in tune" with God?
