Sermon Outline

What words best describe Jesus Christ to you?

Who is He and why is His the most celebrated birth in human history?

Isaiah provides a glimpse into Jesus' greatness at a time of national darkness.

Isaiah 9:1-2 NKJV Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed, As when at first He lightly esteemed The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, And afterward more heavily oppressed her, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, In Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.Isaiah 9:6-7 NKJV For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah used glorious names and titles to introduce the Messiah to the world.

1. Jesus is Wonderful.

Isaiah 9:6 NKJV For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Wonderful =
a miracle, or secret

  • Jesus was wonderful before His birth.
  • Jesus was wonderful at His birth.
  • Jesus is wonderful now.
  • Jesus will be wonderful for evermore!

2. Jesus is Counselor.

Isaiah 9:6 NKJV For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Counsel =
to advise, to resolve

How satisfied are you with your best laid plans?

The most visited stops on the road to trusting God are…

  • a) Despair
  • b) Disillusionment

Why does most counseling fail?

Proverbs 16:25 NKJV There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

Proverbs 1:7 NKJV The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

God offers a soft pillow for every tired heart.

Proverbs 19:21 NKJV There are many plans in a man's heart, Nevertheless the Lord's counsel—that will stand.

Romans 8:28-29 NKJV And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

3. Jesus is the Mighty God.

Isaiah 9:6 NKJV For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Mighty =
powerful

While some possess the ability to reconcile broken human relationships, only Jesus Christ has the power to reconcile our broken relationship with God!

Colossians 1:15-22 NKJV He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight

In Conclusion:

Who is Jesus to you?
